Life in balanceYoga is a profound integrative practice to heal your body, mind, and spirit. Here are just a few of the healing benefits:

  • Stress relief. As scientific studies have found, yoga lowers heart rates, reduces blood pressure, and decreases the production of stress hormones such as cortisol. High levels of cortisol are linked to depression, osteoporosis, and abdominal weight gain.
  • Greater immune function. Yoga’s postures improve the flow of the lymphatic system, responsible for fighting infection and releasing toxins from the body.
  • Flexibility and balance. Yoga helps release tight muscles and increase range of motion. Even those who claim to be “genetically inflexible” are surprised to find how much more limber they can become through a regular yoga practice. Yoga also deepens your awareness of your body, allowing you to improve your balance and posture.
  • Strength. Yoga is a powerful strength-building exercise for every part of the body, including the muscles of your core, back, legs, chest, and arms. This helps prevent problems such as back pain and arthritis. As you strengthen your body, you also build your inner strength, discipline, and self-confidence.
  • Improved mood. Yoga balances the central nervous system and endocrine system and stimulates the release of endorphins – natural mood-elevating neurochemicals. As you practice, your mind relaxes and you’re able to stop dwelling on stressful thoughts and situations.

Even if yoga only enhanced physical fitness, the time spent in practice would be fully justified. However, yoga offers much more than just a way to exercise the body: Yoga helps us cultivate an inner state of body-centered consciousness that allows us to walk calmly amongst the chaos. Yoga teaches us both to let go and to have exquisite awareness in every moment.

According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, “Yoga is the settling of the mind into silence. When the mind has settled, we are established in our essential nature, which is unbounded consciousness.” The essence of yoga is the union or integration of all the layers of life – physical, emotional, and spiritual. It is a practice for going beyond the ego’s habitual identification with the mind and body and directly experiencing our true spiritual self. Rooted in this connection to spirit, we are able to solve the challenges that arise in life. Click here to learn a heart-opening series of yoga poses.

Thinking about becoming a yoga instructor?

Learn more about becoming a certified Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga instructor through Chopra Center University.

Answer: People are complex and multi-faceted beings with many rich layers. These layers mask the essential, spiritual self. These various layers, or koshas (coverings), are categorized into three primary divisions: a physical body, a subtle body, and a causal body (also known as body, mind, and soul.)

Yoga is the union of body, mind, and soul—the union of your individuality with the divine intelligence that orchestrates the universe. For seekers of greater wellbeing, vitality, and wisdom, yoga offers a map that ultimately leads to the soul. Whether you are new to yoga or been practicing for some time, yoga will shift your awareness. Marcel Proust wrote, “The real journey of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes, but in seeing with new eyes.” Yoga will enable you to see your environment, body, mind, and emotions from a whole new perspective.

Question: How do I keep my mind from racing during my yoga practice?

Answer: First, be clear about your intentions prior to your yoga practice: Do you want to experience relaxation, calm, or strength? Happiness, peace of mind, focus? Bring that desire into your heart and mind. As you bring your desires to conscious awareness, surrender. Release your intentions as you move through your postures, trusting that things are exactly as they are for a reason.

Remind yourself to practice present moment awareness through each posture. When thoughts come in, as they inevitably will, don’t worry or become consumed by them. Instead, gently sink back into the pose, bringing your attention back to the here and now. Being present will empower your intentions and desires to manifest through your yoga practice into your life.

Perfect Health takes place each week at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, located on the grounds of the world-famous La Costa Resort & Spa.

Class size is limited in this event to insure the most personal experience.

What is the Perfect Health program?
Perfect Health is a week-long healing process offered each week at the Chopra Center. Deepak Chopra, M.D., and David Simon, M.D., created the Perfect Health program to help you experience relief from your physical pain and the emotional turbulence that often accompanies it.

The Perfect Health program is based on the principles presented in Dr. Chopra’s best-selling book Perfect Health, a practical guide to mind-body healing and the practices of ayurveda – the 5,000-year-old medical system that originated in India.

Each day at Perfect Health, you will experience a customized ayurvedic massage treatment in the loving hands of our Healing Arts Masters, as well as classes in Primordial Sound Meditation, ayurveda, stress management, and other mind-body healing practices. The day begins and ends with group meditations and sessions in the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga.

The cornerstone of the Perfect Health program is panchakarma, a powerful ayurvedic cleansing process that helps the body release accumulated toxins and stress. You will receive daily panchakarma therapies to restore your natural state of balance and calm. Each treatment is tailored to your unique mind-body constitution, using specific essential oils and natural herbs to purify and nurture you at the deepest cellular level.

Who can benefit from Perfect Health?
The Perfect Health program provides immediate and long-term benefits to anyone seeking improved health and vitality, including those coping with:

  • Physical or emotional pain
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Chronic pain and fibromyalgia
  • Job burnout and career stress
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or other digestive problems

What happens at the Perfect Health program?
Your Perfect Health experience begins on Monday morning with a welcome session where you will meet the Chopra Center educators and massage therapists who will be working with you throughout the week. You will experience your first ayurvedic massage treatment and begin the panchakarma cleansing process. Your first class will be an introduction to Primordial Sound Meditation, followed by a special one-on-one session where you will be given your personal mantra. The evening concludes with a group meditation practice and a gentle hatha-style yoga class that will bring you into a state of deep relaxation before you return to your room and drift off to sleep.

In the week that follows, each day begins and ends with sessions in the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga (all levels) and a group meditation held in the serenity of our meditation room, which has absorbed the peaceful vibrations of thousands of meditators over the years. You will receive an individual schedule for your daily ayurvedic massage treatments and panchakarma therapy – as well as for your one-on-one mind-body medical consultation.

All instruction take place in the Chopra Center’s beautiful Dharma room, where you can make yourself comfortable in a seat, backjack, or nestled on the floor with an abundant supply of soft blankets. Fresh fruit, light snacks, and herbal tea are available throughout the day. In this relaxed group setting, our master certified instructors will teach you the fundamentals of living an ayurvedic lifestyle, including:

Why do we do savasana (relaxation pose) at the end of each yoga class? Also, during savasana, should I be meditating or using my Primordial Sound mantra?

An essential part of every yoga practice, savasana is not only a time to relax and let go of tension in the body, it is also a time to let go of tension in the mind. It calms the brain, cleanses the senses, and helps relieve stress. In addition, this relaxation pose rejuvenates the body, reduces headache, insomnia, and fatigue and can help lower blood pressure.

There are many different “styles” of savasana. Some teachers will lead students through a guided meditation, others will play calming music, and others will allow the class to relax in silence. This is not the time to repeat your Primordial Sound mantra, but rather to relax into your body and allow the benefits of your practice to be integrated into your body/mind/spirit experience.

We recommend that students bring their total awareness inside their bodies and enjoy the sensations which they have generated by consciously moving the life force through them. Savasana is also an ideal time to bring the Spiritual Law of the Day into your awareness and to set your intentions. The state of expanded consciousness you access through your yoga practice will support you in the spontaneous fulfillment of your deepest desires.
